From time immemorial, stairs have been the most important vertical access component and are considered a necessity in a building's space allocation plan. However, stairs not only shape circulation spaces, depending on their function, geometry, construction and appearance, but lend a unique character to the entire design. The stair as a space-defining element contributes substantially to the perceived atmosphere or spatial impression. At the same time, There are high demands on the planning of stairs, with large variations due to the multitude of construction tasks and materials. Praxis stairs classifies all stairs types into five pairs of terms, which develop dialectically, and are meticulously differentiated and elucidated at the outset with respect to their historical development. This unique design typology, in the construction typology, allows for clear-cut classification and provides orientation. A detailed planning guide explains the different parts of stairs, construction elements, the types of construction, as well as the materials for the load-bearing parts of a stair, including materials for surfaces and handrails, in a logical step-by-step manner.
